Sultry Los Angeles songstress Ali Handal discovered rock ‘n’ roll in 7th grade, when she was blown away by the explosive riffing of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. She quit piano immediately to pick up her uncle’s electric guitar and hasn’t looked back since.
She became serious about mastering the instrument, and has now made a name for herself as a soulful performer, talented guitarist and accomplished songwriter, as a solo artist and with her band. Handal has reached a global audience; songs from her first two albums, Dirty Little Secret (2000) and Breathing Underwater (2004) have aired on TV shows including Sex in the City, Joan of Arcadia and Dawson’s Creek, plus numerous other television networks and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in-flight entertainment.
Handal does all the guitar work heard on her albums. Her funky rhythm guitar work is influenced by Red Hot Chili peppers guitarist John Frusciante and James Brown’s guitarist, Jimmy Nolen; her soloing still evokes Page, and her vocal style extends from the fervor of Ani DiFranco to the brooding of Fiona Apple. Handal creates, writes and rehearses regularly with her Los Angeles-based band, and, both musically and lyrically, she continually examine and explore love, passion and the inner battle between fearless independence and the desire for companionship.
