Dinosaur Jr. is undoubtedly one of the seminal alternative rock bands that pushed lead guitar into the forefront and shaped a sound that came to define the late 1980s and early 1990s.

And, arguably, the J Mascis-led outfit's most popular song, "Feel the Pain," was one of the era's essential anthems, with a low-fi but head-nodding riff and lyrics that a displaced generation identified with.

"I feel the pain of everyone / and then I feel nothing," was heard on countless modern rock radio stations at the time, and the boom of MTV helped usher Dinosaur Jr. into the mainstream with a music video directed by tastemaker Spike Jonze that showcased Mascis playing golf in the streets of New York City.

As the lead single on 1994's Without a Sound, "Feel the Pain" hit No. 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts and also Mascis launch his first solo acoustic tour in the fall of 1995, which was captured on his first official solo album, Martin & Me (1996).

The song itself is an indie-pop dream, with Mascis laying out a simpmle three-chord riff for the chorus to kick things off and then really digging in for a series of fuzzy interludes. It has every bit of the legendary feel Mascis perfects on his beloved Fender Jazzmaster guitars.
