British bluesman Michael Kiwanuka grew up idolizing the great Jimi Hendrix, which is the main reason why he had to play a Stratocaster.
And it's not just about playing the Strat for the Mercury Prize nominee. Kiwanuka believes the guitar is his main tool of expression and communication.
"A Strat, for me, was like a blues guitar," said Kiwanuka. "It was more about the feel, and the actual sound I get from it is a more heartbreaking, emotional sound. There' s a bit of an edge to it. It cries when you want it to, it gets angry if you want it to.
"All my favorite players, they use the guitar like that. It's an expression, so you're not just hearing them show off how fast they are. It becomes a way to express emotion."
Whether he is releasing his own Neo-Soul Gold Records, or being tapped to work alongside some of today’s hottest artists, Kiwanuka is constantly looking to expand his craft.
