From late-night and daytime sets to in-studio visits and digital exclusives, Fender in Focus gathers the best of the week's performances from Fender players.
This week: Cobi, Iration, Old Dominion, Car Seat Headrest and a bonus from Los Angeles' own Papa.
Cobi: "Don't You Cry for Me"
Minnesota-based singer/songwriter Cobi was helped by the legendary Roots and a trio of backup singers to add a gospel vibe to his single, "Don't You Cry for Me," on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Playing a Fender Stratocaster, Cobi evoked the soulful tones of artists like Hozier or James Bay.
Iration: “Back Around”
One of the leaders in the California reggae scene, Iration dropped into the Pandora offices in Oakland, Calif., to play their single, "Back Around," which comes off the 2013 album Automatic. Singer Micah Pueschel strummed hisPM-1 Deluxe Dreadnought while guitarist Micah Brown played a sharp PM-3 Deluxe Triple-O.
Old Dominion: "
Nashville's Old Dominion has made a name for itself as one of country's hottest acts over the past year, and they brought that buzz to Ellen with the hit single, "Song for Another Time." As frontman Matthew Ramsey played his American Elite Telecaster, he name-checked classic tracks like Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling," Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl."
Car Seat Headrest: “Vincent”
Indie-rock darlings Car Seat Headrest stopped by Seattle's KEXP for a brief set that included the single "Vincent," an excellent noisey offering lifted from 2016's Teens of Denial, that had leader Will Toledo playing a black Telecaster.
Papa: “Lake Life”
Climbing atop the LiveNation headquarters in Los Angeles, Papa performed the dreamy "Lake Life" for BalconyTV. As frontman (and drummer) Darren Weiss kept time with handheld percussion instruments, bassist Danny Presant held down the low-end with his modified Precision Bass.
