Fender in Focus: Pixies, Real Estate and Dude York

From late-night and daytime sets to in-studio visits and digital exclusives, Fender in Focus gathers the best of the week's performances from Fender players.

This week, it's Real Estate, alt-rock pioneers Pixies, indie upstarts Dude York and Soul Coughing founder Mike Doughty.

Pixies: "Bel Esprit"

Even though they released their latest album, Head Carrier, back in September of 2016, Pixies hadn't done a late-night television appearance to support it yet. That is, until this week, when the alternative vanguards came to Conan. Check out their electric performance of the singe "Bel Esprit," during which frontman Black Francis played his Fender Telecaster and bassist Paz Lenchantin had her well-worn Precision Bass keeping the low end.

Real Estate: "Darling"

For their early morning performance on Santa Monica, Calif., station KCRW, Real Estate brought out two of the more obscure Fender instruments. For the track "Darling", which comes off this year's In Mind, singer Martin Courtney strummed an amazing Fender XII, while guitarist Julian Lynch strummed a sharp Coronado.

Dude York: "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)"

Seattle indie trio Dude York celebrated the much anticipated release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 this week alongside the A.V. Club with a sweet cover of "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)". Originally recorded by Looking Glass in 1972, the song appears on the Guardians 2 soundtrack, and Dude York definitely put their own spin on it. With bassist Claire England performing on her Mustang Bass, watch the band give this classic a glammier look.

Mike Doughty: "Circles"

In a recent intimate concert for Minnesota's 89.3 the Current, Mike Doughty brought it back to the 1990s with a solo performance of "Circles". Many might remember that single from quirky alt-rockers Soul Coughing, the band Doughty founded two decades ago. In this version, Doughty used his trusty Coronado, which he affectionately has named "Greeny".
