If you saw Episode 1 and Episode 2 of Fender’s Plugged In series featuring producer Kenny Beats, you’d know that the prolific musician and producer has a penchant for simplifying things in the studio to emulate the classic records he grew up loving.
This chapter shows Beats build on what he’s worked on in order to finish his DIY track, breaking down several of the barriers that can intimidate and confuse rookie artists.
Beats lets the cameras into his studio yet again to demonstrate how to record his American Professional II Telecaster through his favorite microphones — making sure to include a room mic — and nothing else but a Fender Twin Reverb to get his ideal sound.
“When I want to sound how these classic records really sound, oftentimes, I’m picking up my Telecaster, I’m going to my Twin Reverb and plugging in these microphones,” said Beats. “All the different scary studio stuff that feels unattainable or like you're never going to get to it, is really not that hard. It just takes a couple of good questions and a couple of good teachers.”
Throughout his three-episode arc of Plugged In, Beats is clearly passing on his knowledge to the next generation of producers. Watch now in the video above, and click here to learn more about the American Professional II Series.
