Fender Re-Creation: Julien Baker Performs "Something"

Tennessee-based singer-songwriter Julien Baker earned wide acclaim with her 2015 album, Sprained Ankle, a personal project that catapulted her career to include several more releases, television appearances and opening spots for the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, The National and Frightened Rabbit.

As Baker’s sound expanded — including the formation of supergroup boygenius with Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers — she continued to evolve, most notably in the full-band sound of 2021’s Little Oblivions. Recorded just prior to the recent pandemic, Baker played nearly all the instruments on the album, resulting in a step forward from the acoustic folk vibe of her early work.

However, in this episode of Fender’s Re-Creation series, Baker took things back to her beginnings. Picking up an American Acoustasonic Stratocaster, Baker chose to play the song “Something,” which was the breakout track off Sprained Ankle, adding a flair all her own to the performance.

The result showcases the incredible versatility of the American Acoustasonic Stratocaster, with Baker using several of the specifically dialed voices to bring lush soundscapes to one of her most lauded songs.
