Re-Creation Remixed: Jesse Performs No Doubt’s "Don’t Speak"

No Doubt’s groundbreaking 1996 album, Tragic Kingdom, catapulted the SoCal rockers to the stratosphere on the fuel of its bouncy ska-punk edginess, heartfelt lyrics and slew of radio-ready singles — and perhaps the biggest one that still stands strong to this day is “Don’t Speak.”

Originally written by No Doubt singer Gwen Stafani and her brother, Eric, the breakup ballad topped the charts around the world, has been featured in countless television programs and movies, and is a favorite for artists of all genres to cover.

That’s just what Jesse Rutherford (more commonly known as simply Jesse) decided to do on this edition of Fender’s Re-Creation Remixed video series.

The Neighbourhood frontman played the track solo, armed with only an Acoustasonic Player Telecaster to strip it down to its bones, using the authentic acoustic voicings to add an ethereal vibe to Stefani’s hit.

For fans of the Neighbourhood, Jesse teased that this cover has a good chance to show up at future shows.

“I know when I go to a show and I see someone do a cover, and it’s something that everybody knows, it’s just easy and nice to be able to sing along,” he said. “I’m at a moment in my life where I could relate to the lyrics pretty heavily.”

Jesse also brought out an acoustic version of the Neighbourhood’s standout from the band’s 2020 album, Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones, entitled “Pretty Boy,” an introspective piece he wrote after experiencing a pair of earthquakes in California and examining the loved ones with which he was immediately surrounded.
