Throughout a storied career as lead guitarist for rock legends Blur and a run of eight acclaimed solo albums, Graham Coxon has become known for playing a Fender Telecaster.
But because Coxon was drawn to the model because of its workhorse nature, how would he feel about a completely new kind of guitar in the American Acoustasonic Telecaster?
Turns out, the early reviews are overwhelmingly positive.
Designed to inspire, the Acoustasonic Telecaster delivers both an organic acoustic feel and Fender electric playability.
The Acoustasonic Telecaster is powered by the Fender- and Fishman-designed Acoustic Engine – a proprietary blend of classic analog and future technologies that optimizes the guitar’s natural sound, and then modifies the resonance to deliver a curated collection of voices.
These acoustic and electric voices can be played solo or blended via the Mod Knob to create new sounds. They can also be used simultaneously, courtesy of the Fender Acoustasonic Noiseless magnetic pickup.
Upon trying the Acoustasonic Telecaster out, Coxon appreciated that versatility. He even thought it would have helped him when he was a beginning guitarist.
"I find it interesting that you can play what you'd normally play on an acoustic guitar," Coxon said. "If I'd have had this when I started playing guitar ... I'd borrow my sister's acoustic guitar when I was 13, and I had to be very determined because it was the most horible thing to play. It was bloody fingers and everything."
Coxon - who is known for an inventive style that blends influences across many genres - believed the Acoustasonic Telecaster could benefit players that need to shift tones on the fly.
"It's the sort of comfort of it and being able to have sounds right there that you can get very quickly by diaaling in while you're (playing)" he said. "I go between electric strumming and fingerstyle in a gig, so it's very handy to be able to find the right setting. It's also quite interesting to blend between the acoustic and the electric."
At the end of the day, the Acoustasonic Telecaster encourages experimentation, something Coxon definitely did with it in his hands.
"I love Telecasters purely because of their simplicity, and this kind of does the same in the acoustic world," he said. "Each sound is good and each sound is useful."
