ARTIST SIGNATURE SPECS: SQUIER J MASCIS JAZZMASTER
For over forty years the indie supernova J Mascis has been blowing minds and melting faces as the frontman and lead guitarist for the legendary Dinosaur, Jr. Formed in 1984 out of the ashes of his Boston-based hardcore band Deep Wound, Dinosaur, Jr.'s run of treasured LPs during the 80s and 90s includes the minted alternative classics You're Living All Over Me (1987), Bug (1988) and Green Mind (1991). Those releases established Dinosaur's iconic, much imitated sonic template — gorgeous ringing melodies over wry and bummed-out love songs, typically resolving with one of Mascis's patented, effects-driven guitar freakouts — an irresistible weigh station between Jimi Hendrix and My Bloody Valentine.
A key component of Mascis’s sound comes from his guitar of choice for decades: the Fender Jazzmaster. In 2011, Squier partnered with the singular frontman to create a signature model that remains a favorite to this day for players at all levels. Here’s a closer look at some of the specs of this beloved offset, hand-chosen by Mascis himself to capture his unique tone and style.
