DIVERSE INFLUENCES, STARTING WITH FAMILY

Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez — better known to the world as Juanes — might be a multi-time Grammy Award winner and platinum-certified artist many times over, but he stays true to his humble beginnings in music.

Raised in Medellín, Colombia, he always had music in the house, with instruments available to play at a moment’s notice. In fact, he was taught the basics of the guitar by his brothers and father before he even reached his teenage years.

“I remember coming home from school and there were three or four guitars in the living room,” he said. “I saw my brothers playing, and in fact, almost the first memories I have are those. The music came from my family and then music took me and continues to take me to incredible places to this day.”

Juanes wasn’t just enamored with playing the guitar, however. He was a young sponge of the many genres that were popular in and around his hometown, from metal to traditional folk to popular cumbia.

In high school, he went the hard rock route, starting the band Ekhymosis and playing large stages in Colombia for a decade, but eventually decided to strike out on his own and collect all of his influences into something totally original.

“I was playing metal for many years and I realized that I had to start looking for my own sound,” he said. “In that search, I started to think, ‘OK, I’m going to lower the distortion a bit and find a sound.’”

A VERSATILE TOOL TO INSPIRE IDEAS

Since that moment, Juanes has sold over 15 million albums worldwide, topped charts around the world and stocked his mantle with too many awards to count, with his latest record, Vida Cotidiana, only looking to add to those accolades.

A longtime Stratocaster player, Juanes looked up to many of the legends that brought this classic body shape to the forefront.

“For a while, my favorite artists played a Stratocaster,” he said. “Obviously, Jimi Hendrix, for example. David Gilmour — I love his way of playing. I always remember my nights in Medellín listening to Pink Floyd, listening to those solos. So beautiful.”

As a young artist, he even sold his motorcycle, computer and amplifier to buy his first Fender guitar. Now, he’s got a signature model that he’s proud to lend his name to.

The Jaunes Signature Stratocaster features custom-voiced pickups, with a humbucking pickup in the bridge position and mid-boost circuit for tonal versatility. It’s also decked out in a Luna White satin lacquer finish for an elegant and unique look you won’t find anywhere else. Add in a 1-piece deep “C” maple neck with a comfortable 10”-14” compound radius fingerboard, and this Strat offers the ultimate in playability.

“I’ve never been a virtuoso guitarist, but I’ve always tried to play with my soul,” he said. “It’s like a tool with which I can express all my feelings.

“You never imagine that you will have a guitar. That’s an ambitious dream. Today, I feel that I only need this guitar and many ideas. I would trade all my guitars for just one, but with many ideas.”
